New and Renewable Energy Research at RAL

The Energy Research Unit (ERU) specialises in performing and enabling innovative research on new and renewable energy technologies. The Unit, established over 40 years ago at STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, previously carried out internationally-leading work on wind energy research, and now provides:

  • Strategic advice and information about energy R&D priorities to all major stakeholders
  • Outdoor test facilities for New and Renewable Energy research
  • Contributions to Public Understanding of Science

ERU is funded from outside STFC, mainly from EPSRC and other UK Research Councils, Government Departments and agencies, STFC Innovations and industrial partners.
